A brief history of merchandising

During the glory days of physical retail, teams of merchandisers would be dispatched to shops armed with planograms agreed upon by both the brand and retailer, often as part of a paid arrangement.

These planograms dictated product placement, ensuring items were displayed based on demand and margins. The most in-demand, high-margin products were positioned at eye level to maximise visibility and sales.

Why rank is important

Unlike in physical retail, where customers can see the entire category as soon as they enter the shop, with E-commerce sites they are served products in a particular order, often only 5-10 at a time.

The order in which products are served is determined by the retailer's algorithm, which itself relies on a large number of data points.

The more likley the algorithm thinks a product will sell, the higher up the rankings it will appear. Factors influencing the algorithm include current sales volume, availability, review scores, discount, tags, keywords and many more.
